Vans Triple Crown - Oceanside
written by Vans correspondent, Chris Overholser; photos by Real Skate's Julio Martin.

Oceanside, CA (October 7, 2001) The third and final stop of the Vans Triple Crown of Skateboarding, the Xbox World Championships of Skateboarding, arrived with a bang at the Oceanside Pier and Amphitheater. The event featured the top competitors from this year's Vans Triple Crown Series, and the weekend was full of intense action. Bastien Salabanzi wowed a crowd of thousands as he pulled out a dazzling array of tricks to take first place in the Street competition. At the Vert ramp, the riders took to the air, and after an amazing display of aerial dexterity, Bob Burnquist landed with top honors. The prize purse for the Xbox World Championships was set at an astounding $125,000.

The weather was perfect and the setting sublime as the world's best competed in Street, Vert & Bowl competitions. Omar Hassan flossed his pool skills and took first place in the Young Guns Bowl category (for riders under 30 years of age), edging out Brian Patch and Sandro Dias, who finished second and third, respectively. In the Master's Bowl, a field of legends including Steve Caballero & Mike McGill set the soul bowl ablaze. When the smoke cleared, McGill was champion, with Steve Caballero and Toy Magnusson finished second and third.

Fifteen year-old Vanessa Torres, who has torn up the entire Vans Triple Crown Series, swept the series by taking her third consecutive first place in the Women's Street competition. Cara-Beth Burnside earned top honors in Womenıs Bowl.
With the results in and the points tallied, the Best Overall Vans Triple Crown Champions were announced. In the street category, Eric Koston's first place win at Slam City Jam and his second place in Oceanside were enough to closely beat out Chad Bartie and Colt Cannon. In Vert, Rune Glifberg, who placed second at Slam City Jam, first at the Mountain Dew Nationals in Cleveland and second in Oceanside was a clear winner. Both champions took hope $10,000 as a reward for their outstanding performances.

The event will be broadcast on NBC Sports on December 8 at 5:00 p.m. EST as part of NBC's ongoing coverage of the Vans Triple Crown Series.

Shoes

The Rowley XLT - review by Ryde

Vans has demonstrated once again why they're a skate industry leader, with their "Off The Wall" Rowley XLT skate shoe. No one does it better than Vans in combining a classic look with innovation.
This is definitely a pro model shoe with old school lines and contemporary design features that Geoff himself helped to create. I have a pair of these and they're great!
The shoes are light weight, made of syhthetic nubuck uppers, with a slightly padded collar including the tongue. It also has inner elastic centering straps that hold the tongue in place. It's a feature I always liked because it

bothers the hell out of me to always have it shifting, and the elastic also helps to keep it firm around your feet and ankles without having to lace up tightly.

The outsoles are a thick gum rubber and the bottoms are the Vans traditional flat waffle sole design. You know what I mean. The type that keep you flat, grounded, and stuck to your board, and who knows that better than Geoff. (Forget all those shoes that have sci-fi-looking soles. They don't work anyway).

The Vans Rowley XLT is excellent footwear. Whether you're a serious skater, or if you just like to paddle out to the nearest mini-mart for a cold one, or you only want a shoe that looks tight and is built for comfort, then check out the Geoff Rowley XLT. You'll for sure get your money's worth out of them.

Alan Peterson Pro Model - review by Gabe Smith

What is it about shoes that makes them good? They protect our feet from things. That's good. What is it about skateboard shoes that make them good for skateboarding? I like a shoe that's comfortable, looks nice, doesn't tear out an ollie hole on the first day, yet still enables me to feel my board. A skateboard shoe should have a nice grippy sole that doesn't wear out after a couple weeks. I don't like most of the rubbery ollie guards out there, something about them doesn't feel right.
Many skate shoes appear to have nice thick protection to the untrained eye, and upon second glance (or worse yet up one trial and error) you find out that the company that designed them sporting their stylish looks and super team, create an anti-protection area precisely where you need it least. Few shoes out there actually have a functional ollie protection system, and the ones that do are usually painfully ugly, or simply to thick and floppy to actually feel comfortable skating in.
For those of us who desire good things in shoe; for those of us who can't afford the new $120 ultra-tech-dynamo-might shoe every month, Vans (in conjunction with one Mr. Alan Peterson) created an excellent piece of skateboard equipment. Function, style, and a classic company that's been supporting skateboarding for 35 years in combination with a skateboarder who has been pushing skateboarding from the underground true meaning of the art. Plus they have that neat little cube on the back. Consolidated's Alan Peterson is still rocking it and that cube has a certain significance to many. I really like these shoes a lot. Have a good day and have fun when you skateboard.

New Vans Parks

John Moran representz Real Skate for the VIP opening of the Joisey park and will report back with photos and all da scoop. We're still waiting for John, we think he's still there! The park opened to the public on the 29th of April.

Update: We found John! But unfortunately they wouldn't let him use a flash. Kinda strange since it WAS a media event, oh well. We tried. He had a great time anyway, and said the park was nothing less than awesome. Thanks John!

That's about it for now. Keep this page bookmarked for future Vans press releases, our shoe reviews, and whatnot.
